Organic Chemistry Section

Department of Inorganic and Organic Chemistry

Jaume Farràs was born in Sant Llorenç Savall (Barcelona) in 1959, and obtained his first degree in Chemistry at the Universitat de Barcelona in 1982 and his doctoral degree in Chemical Sciences iat the Department of Organic Chemistry at the same University in 1989. The same year he received a MEC-Fulbright award that allowed him to carry out postdoctoral studies at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He is currently Associate Professor in the Organic Chemistry Section at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Universitat de Barcelona, situated in the International Excellence Campus "Barcelona Knowledge Campus" (BKC). Since 2007 he has formed part of the Institute of Biomedicine of the University of Barcelona (IBUB) in the research group "Synthetic Methodology Applied to Bioactive Compounds" (SMBioCom).

His research centers on synthetic organic chemistry and its biomedical applications. He has also worked in the field of modified nucleoside and oligonucleotide chemistry and in various aspects of computational chemistry and molecular modelling. Lately he has become involved in the project "OstreoRisk" of the Marine Sciences Institute, orientated towards the study and prevention of the risks derived from the uncontrolled proliferation of certain species of benthic dinoflagellates as a consequence of climate change and anthropological change.
