Jordi Garcia was born in Barcelona in 1956. He obtained a degree in chemistry in 1979 at the Universitat de Barcelona, and another in pharmacy in 1992 at the same university. After a short stay at the Institute de Chemie des Substances Naturalles (Gif-sur-Yvette, CNR, France) working on carbohydrate chemistry in Prof. Gabor Lukacs' laboratory, he obtained his Ph. D. in 1986 (Universitat de Barcelona) on synthetic organic chemistry, under the supervision of Prof. Jaume Vilarrasa. After postdoctoral studies (1986-87) with Professor Satoru Masamune at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge (USA) working on boron chemistry, he was appointed to the post of Associate Professor and later Professor at the Organic Chemistry Department ( UB). He has been secretary of the Organic Chemistry Department (1990-93) and vice-dean of the Faculty of Chemistry (2004-08). Since 2007 Prof. Garcia has been a member of the Institute of Biomedicine of the University of Barcelona (IBUB) on the Campus of International Excellence known as Barcelona Knowledge Campus (BKC). Currently he is the Head of the Department of Inorganic and Organic Chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Barcelona

His research activity includes both academic and applied projects in the area of stereoselective methodology and synthesis of natural products, especially those related with boron and palladium chemistry. He is also involved in challenging projects on the border between biochemistry (analogues of C75 as anti-obesity and type 2 diabetes drugs or anti-cancer agents) and inorganic chemistry (C-H activation).
